Cased Factory engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket percussion revolver
This revolver was manufactured in 1856 and selected for engraving by the factory as indicated by the "." (dot) by the main serial number locations. The engraving matches others known by Master Engraver Gustave Young, note particularly the use of a dog’s head amongst the scrollwork on the left by the wedge and the wolf head pattern on the hammer. The traditional scrollwork throughout is of course also his style and is backed by finely textured punch dot backgrounds and accented by border, shell, and floral motifs. The hammer has 4 dots, and number 6, stamped that indicate the amount of time dedicated to engraving them, often seen on Gustave Young engraved guns. The 6 inch barrel has a dovetail blade front sight and has have an engraved “SAML COLT” address. Left side of frame is engraved in a ribbon “COLTS PATENT”. The trigger guard is silver plated brass, as is the backstrap which holds a one-piece Factory Ivory grip, the serial number is very lightly visible in the backstrap channel. The Ivory grip has a hairline-crack on the left side which is nothing serious. Frame and recoil shield have full coverage deluxe engraving by Gustav Young, consisting of intertwined foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background and several scrolls terminating in blooming flowers. The engraving extends over the barrel lug and onto the rammer pivot plate and the wavy line borders on the barrel lug faces are part of extra grade of decoration that is denoted by the small dots near each serial number; guns so marked would get special attention from the engraving and finishing rooms. A single scroll on the right-hand side finishes in a Mr. Young’s trademark dogs head. Top side flats of the octagonal barrel are engraved to match, tapering out after the pivot, the barrel crown has a simple border pattern. The upper portion of the back strap has Mr. Young’s distinctive fan motif with more folate patterns down the back strap, butt strap and trigger guard while the front strap remains clear of engraving. All screw heads and pins are engraved with star bursts and appear finished with Colt’s fire blue. The five shot cylinder is roll marked with a Stagecoach holdup scene with Colt’s Patent marking and matching serial number; all five cylinder nipples and safety pins are in good order. The barrel, wedge, rammer, frame and hammer retain visible case colors. The cylinder has a blue / gray finish. The trigger guard and backstrap retains almost all of its silver plating. Mechanically the gun is in fine working order with a strong mainspring and timed cylinder rotation. The bore exhibits strong rifling and is nice and shining.
The Factory case is in excellent condition and has nice Burgundy red fabric in it. The case has no cracks or repairs. The Colt’s Patent brass bullet mold, Col’s Patent package of five paper cartridges, Colt’s Patent Eley Bro’s cap tin, Colt’s Patent L-shaped nipple wrench and he one side pattern “Eagle with shield flask” are all in excellent condition.
Overall, a rare and delightful set in excellent condition which will be a great addition to any Colt collection.
